Bowen therapy is a gentle hands-on therapy in which subtle moves are made over connective tissue, muscles, tendons and ligaments sending messages deep into the body prompting your body to make changes on any level. These changes could be physical, emotional, or psychological in order to trigger positive improvements in your health and well-being.

Bowen therapy is a very relaxing treatment where the therapist gently, using fingers and thumbs works in different areas of the body. Each treatment is totally bespoke to you and your needs. Bowen therapy can be given through light clothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect in a Bowen treatment?

At your first treatment, please allow an hour and an half. An in-depth first consultation to discuss your pain points and your general well-being and how your pain affects you on a day-to-day basis will take up to half an hour followed by an hour's Bowen treatment. Please bring with you a list of medications that you are currently taking.

At the start of subsequent treatments a brief consultation will be conducted to see how you are and how you are feeling from your previous treatment.

All treatments are carried out in a private room on a therapy bed, with blankets to help keep you warm and aid relaxation. No oils or lotions are used as they are not necessary. A treatment can be performed over light, loose clothing. Often it is advisable to bring a vest and shorts to change into.

During your treatment, pauses (Bowen breaks) of up to 2 minutes are given. These Bowen breaks give time to trigger your body's own innate healing capacity to correct imbalances, heal and to relax.

After a Bowen treatment, clients have said they ‘feel extremely relaxed, as though a weight has been lifted’.

What should I wear?

Bowen therapy treatment can be performed over light, loose clothing. You can bring shorts and vests to change into. It is requested that you do not wear jeans as these are too thick and running leggings are too slippery to allow the Bowen moves to be effective.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person, but if you have a long-standing injury you will typically require more treatments than someone whose injuries have recently occurred. Most people will start to experience the positive effects of Bowen therapy immediately after their first treatment.

Typically for long-standing injuries and pain, clients will require 3 treatments, one week apart, and then discuss with Nicky a maintenance treatment programme to keep on top of your well-being.

It is recommended that you wait a week between treatments as Bowen can initiate a cascade of beneficial changes within your body that can continue to work up to a week after treatment. This means you will continue to heal and feel better throughout that entire time.

It is also advisable to avoid any other hands-on therapies such as massage, chiropractic therapy, physiotherapy so as not to confuse your body with mixed messages.

After-care following your treatment

Water - make sure you drink plenty of water so that you keep yourself hydrated. Sipping water will help your body absorb it much better and help keep you better hydrated.

Walk - try to move around after a Bowen treatment: just gentle walking every half an hour. You could set your phone to remind you. This is important as Bowen therapy works a lot on the lymphatic system. Your lymphatic system does not have a pump of its own, so moving around just keeps the lymphatic system moving.

Wait - Bowen therapy continues to work up to a week after a treatment, so it is advisable to wait between 5-7 days between treatments. It is recommended that you avoid any hands-on treatments such as massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic therapy until your course of Bowen therapy has been completed. This helps your body not to get confused with mixed messages.
